Test Description

The Mathematics Placement Exam (MPE) is a 90- minute, 60-item multiple choice exam that tests skills and understandings from precalculus mathematics. It is designed to measure readiness for college courses in calculus and precalculus. You will receive an individual printout that includes placement level and a list of topics that should be reviewed before the class begins.

The test scores are entered in the student registration system to allow you to register for a math class through WebReg. Test results are valid for one calendar year. You may repeat the test and the last placement level will replace any previous test results.

If your enrollment in a math course hinges on your test score, take the test as early as possible. This allows you time to review the suggested topics and even retake the test after studying, if you wish.

The topics covered on the test are:

  • Rational Expressions
  • Exponents and Radicals
  • Linear Equations and Inequalities
  • Polynomials and Polynomial Equations
  • Functions
  • Trigonometry
  • Logarithmic and Exponential Functions
  • Word Problems
